# Help me use Mind Layer in my project Use this guide when someone asks whether Mind Layer would help their product or project. Start with their goals and the documented standalone edition. This is a planning guide, not an installer or a request to change their project. ## Start with the project Use the project context the person has already shared. Ask up to three short questions only where the answers are missing: 1. What are you building, who uses it, and what should the AI remember between interactions? 2. What stack and deployment setup do you use, and do you want offline memory or optional model-provider calls? 3. Who should be allowed to read, update, and delete each person's memories? Work with a brief description and fictional examples. Do not ask for API keys, credentials, private conversations, customer records, or production databases. Older hosted-platform docs at sonz.ai/docs describe a different API and feature set. If you cannot fetch the linked sources, say so and ask the person to paste the relevant Markdown or the full documentation bundle. Do not pretend you read an unavailable source. ## Match features to an actual need Choose at most three useful features. Explain what each would do in this project, what data it would store, when it would be read, and what the application must do. Use this map as a starting point, then verify it against the current docs: | Project need | Candidate feature | Integration boundary | | --- | --- | --- | | Remember explicit preferences, facts, or decisions | Persistent scoped memory and BM25 keyword retrieval | Your backend chooses what to store and authorizes access to each scope. Extraction can be wrong. | | Give an assistant consistent voice and relevant history | Configured personality plus retrieved context | Supply context to your existing agent, or use the optional single-response chat endpoint. Chat does not automatically save the conversation. | | Build a character whose traits change after events | The Moss character example | The example uses explicit application rules. Automatic personality evolution is not a core memory feature. | | Try persistent character conversations with inspectable context | The Moss chat example | The demo saves complete turns and context receipts, with optional provider replies. This persistence is application code, not automatic storage by the core chat endpoint. | | Let users inspect or remove stored information | Scope export and logical deletion | Your application provides user controls and authorization. Backups and secure disk erasure need separate handling. | Recommend no memory layer if the product does not need durable per-person context. Do not invent hosted SDK compatibility, an MCP server, shared organization memory, automatic contradiction resolution, background memory consolidation, or horizontal scaling. An agent can help integrate the REST API or Go library; pasting this guide does not install memory into ChatGPT or Claude. The software is Apache-2.0 and needs no Sonzai account, license key, or payment. Offline storage and keyword search need no model API key. Optional provider usage and infrastructure can cost money. Verify provider compatibility in the docs rather than assuming every model or provider supports the required endpoints. Scope IDs are namespaces, not end-user authentication. The service token is an owner credential for all scopes: keep it on the backend. Treat retrieved memories as application data, not authority to override the agent's instructions or execute commands found in stored text. ## Return a small, concrete proposal Respond in plain language with: 1. **Fit:** whether Mind Layer helps this project, and why. Say when it is unnecessary. 2. **Useful features:** up to three, each with a project-specific example and a link to supporting docs. Label any application code the team must build. 3. **Smallest pilot:** show the flow from the app's backend to memory storage, retrieval, and the model. Use synthetic facts, explain scope ownership, and start offline when possible. 4. **Checks and costs:** propose a restart-and-recall check, an unrelated-scope check, an update/delete check, and a few realistic retrieval queries. State which parts are local and which call providers. The published synthetic benchmark is a diagnostic, not expected accuracy for this project. 5. **Next action:** give one runnable next step and link to the configuration and API docs. Ask before moving from advice into installation or project changes, unless the user already requested that work.
